Whether you’re at the entry-level just getting started, looking to change careers, or a more experienced and possibly seasoned professional, there’s a Microsoft certification path that will fit your career path. And, with the role-based certifications this is even more accurate than the older technology based certification were. The certification paths are also clearer now with less “elective exams” to choose from that might be confusing to navigate. Simply earn the desired role-based certification by passing the required exams, and then move on to the next level by passing one or more additional exams to build your way up to a Microsoft Certified Expert!

Microsoft Certified Associate Roadmap
Here’s a simplified roadmap graphic to help you navigate the list of Microsoft Certified Associate certifications. This graphics does center around the Microsoft Azure certifications as those are the most popular.

The Associate certifications require you to either pass 1 or 2 certification exams to earn. These are the certifications that the majority of professionals with at least 2 years of experience working in the industry will be working towards.
You do have the option of obtaining one of the Microsoft Certified: Fundamentals certifications prior to pursuing one of the Associate level certifications. This is, however, not required. If you already have the expertise, you can just straight to the Associate level exams and certifications. Although, if you are new to the technologies, then it is recommended you start with the Fundamentals certifications.
Certification Paths : Microsoft Certified Expert

There are 3 Expert level certifications for those with more advanced expertise of Microsoft Azure and cloud technologies; for those with two to five years of deep technical experience. These are generally not the certifications you start with, but rather the certifications you work up towards after obtaining an “Associate” level certification.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert
Currently, there are only three Microsoft Certified Expert level certifications. Hopefully we’ll see more announced and released soon, as there are plenty of job-roles that could benefit from Expert certification paths. For now, the Expert certifications are great as they apply to those working as Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect, both Administrators and Developers working as DevOps Engineers, or even Enterprise Administrators working with Microsoft 365.

The Azure DevOps Engineer Expert certification is earned by passing an additional exam, the AZ-400 Microsoft Azure DevOps Solutions, after already earring either the Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate certifications.
The Azure Solutions Architect and Microsoft 365 Enterprise Administrator Expert certifications are a little different. The Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification has its own 2 exams, and once passing those exams you will earn the certification. The Microsoft 365 Enterprise Administrator Expert certification has its own 2 exams that build upon one of the prerequisite Microsoft 365 Certified Associate certifications to be earned.

Happy studying!
There are additional pre-reqs exams to getting M365: Enterprise Administrator Expert and not just MS 100 and MS 101.
Ah, thanks for the catch
You mention Administrator Associate certification as the focused certification when talking about the Solutions Architect role. Shouldn’t this rather be the actual solutions architect certification, offered at the expert level?
Yes, the post has been fixed. Thanks!
Very interesting article summarizing very well what we can find across different Microsoft pages, thanks for this article.
Coming from UNIX/Linux, I’ve decided in 2017 to start with AWS certifications. I started with the AWS Solutions Architect Associate and now I have the AWS SysOps Associate. By AWS you do not necessarily have to pass the SysOps or Developer before doing the Architect one, because they are all at the associate level.
I’m interested to pass the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert but my concern is that I do not have experiences with AD which is largely used and covered in the exam. And Microsoft does not have a Solution Architect associate exam as AWS.
I use Azure almost daily for about 1.5 years now, I also use it personally in parallel with AWS for personal backup using a blob storage account.
If I’m not interested to become an admin but want to keep focusing on the architecture, and if I do not have the AD experience, do I really have to pass the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate first, before moving to the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert ?
Thanks in advance
No, you do not need to earn the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, before earning the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert. The Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification doesn’t have any prerequisites, other than the 2 exams required to earn that certification.
Thanks Chris. I know there is no prerequisites for the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, however I would be interested know what you would recommend. Would you recommend to go through the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate first, even though you only focus to the architect one, or would you suggest to go with the architect directly ?
Nicolas, if the Azure Solutions Architect role best fits your expertise and/or career path, then I’d recommend to just go straight to earning the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification. If you’re still newer to Microsoft Azure and the cloud, then I’d recommend doing the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals certification first. There’s no need to earn the Azure Administrator certification first, if you are not in an Administrator role. This is really what’s nice about the layout of the role-based certification paths from Microsoft.
Perfect, thanks for your recommendations.
I’m not new to the cloud and I already own the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals certification. Therefore, I will likely go with the architect.
Chris, as always, a very nice summary and great post. Informational and beneficial to those looking for a place to get an overview of the new certifications. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, Edward! I really appreciate it.
I’m a SQL developer, would like to switch my career to cloud, what certification would be the best fit for my role?
If you’re new to Azure and the cloud, then I recommend starting with the AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals certification. Then from the data path, the certification you’ll want to look at earning is the Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate certification.
Thanks for your input.
