The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect certification is a great credential for showcasing your expertise in the Microsoft Azure cloud. It will validate your expertise in designing cloud based solutions across compute, networking, storage, and security.


The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect certification doesn’t have any prerequisites as required by Microsoft before attempting to pass the required exams to earn this certification.

Even though this certification does not have any specific prerequisites it is still recommended that you earn the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals certification by passing the AZ-900 Microsoft Azure Fundamentals certification exam. Depending on your existing IT and Cloud related expertise, you could greatly benefit by taking this route first before pursuing the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect certification.

Required Certification Exams

The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect certification can be earned by taking and passing the following 2 certification exams:

  1. AZ-300: Microsoft Azure Architect Technologies
  2. AZ-301: Microsoft Azure Architect Design

While you could technically take either the AZ-300 or AZ-301 certification exam first. It is recommended that you start with passing AZ-300, then move on to AZ-301. The exam objectives are arranged such that the AZ-301 exam basically builds on top of the objectives of AZ-300.

Upgrade for Existing 70-535 Certification

If you’ve previously passed the old 70-535 Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions certification exam, then you are eligible to take and pass the AZ-302 Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Certification Transition exam. This will enable you to transition from your current certification to the new Azure Solutions Architect certification track by passing a single “upgrade” exam.

A common question from those who have previously been certified in Microsoft Azure is whether those who have previously passed the 70-534 Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect certification exam can take this transition exam as well. Unfortunately, the transition exam only apply if you’ve passed the 70-535 exam. If you only have passed the 70-534 exam, then you will need to take both the AZ-300 and AZ-301 in order to earn this certification.
